I removed this tiny essay for a very personal
reason, but can't seem to leave it removed.

I consider it a work in progress.

Animal slaughter

I was essentially vegetarian the first half of my adult life; then ate a lot of beef and chicken for a similar time span. I've recently again become mostly vegetarian.

In fact, I've now gone vegan in the hope of outliving my young dog. One need only to supplement B12 and use iodized salt. (Pre-packaged foods contain only non-iodized salt. Don't buy them unless you want to supplement iodine.)

For health reasons, we should be consuming little or no meat, fish, dairy or eggs. The only reason vegans need to supplement B12 is that humans have evolved away from consuming unwashed root vegetables. We used to get ample B12 from the trace amount of soil clinging to the vegetables.

Similarly, edible plants contain iodine; but the amount varies widely with the soil in which they are grown, which is why iodized salt is rightfully popular. People along sea coasts have always had good access to seaweed (kelp), which contains abundant iodine.

Indeed, humans can be naturally vegan. And I'm feeling physically better than I've felt in my entire life.

Over 20 million farm animals die each year in the United States from heat stress, freezing or trauma during transport from farms to slaughterhouses.

Slaughtering rules are weak and mostly unenforced. Pigs and hogs, especially, suffer terribly. Horrific screaming deaths even as they seek affection from their killers. See: HFA.htm. Research it and you will be devastated.

Fishing -- commercial and otherwise -- entails every bit as much or more suffering. Can we leave the fish be?

Well-cared-for cattle or chicken -- right up to the point of euthanasia -- are a better option for meat, as well as for milk products and eggs.

One dairy cow provides us with 21 times as much protein as a beef cow, per life of the cow, in the form of yogurt or milk.

One chicken provides us with 10 times as much protein in the form of eggs than does meat from a chicken.

We should not be using mice or any animal for testing drugs. It is sinful. If a person wishes to volunteer themselves for experimental drugs, they should be free to do so. Mice and other animals do not volunteer for experimental drugs.
